New Year’s Eve in the Harz
==========================

Half-timbered idyll, romantic mountain villages, Feuerzangenbowle and winter sports fun – spending New Year’s Eve in the Harz is definitely worth it!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With or without snow, the unique atmosphere of the magical mountain world fascinates visitors to the Harz at New Year’s Eve. During the day, people explore the surroundings on foot or by skis and sleds, in the evening they enjoy the romantic mood, and at midnight they watch high above the valleys as the spirits of the old year are driven away by fireworks.

But spending time in the timber-framed towns of the Harz during New Year’s Eve is also well worth it. Many Christmas markets remain open beyond the holidays and sweeten the time until the turn of the year, for example with the traditional Feuerzangenbowle.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Harz is therefore a very special experience, whether you prefer to celebrate far from the hustle and bustle in the mountains or join a New Year’s Eve party in town.

- What can you do during the day on New Year’s Eve?

Even on New Year’s Eve, the Harz offers you plenty of possibilities. Whether you want to be active, experience culture or simply find peace –
between snowy forests, historic old towns and gentle ridge paths you’ll find the right activities for your last day of the year.

    **Winter sports & snow fun:**
Around Wurmberg, Torfhaus or Schierke you can look forward to slopes, trails and toboggan runs. Here you can spend the day skiing, sledging or cross-country skiing and enjoy the winter scenery.

    **Nostalgia on rails:**
A ride on the narrow-gauge railway – for example to the Brocken – takes you through snow-covered forests. Wrapped in steam, you’ll see the wintery Harz from a special perspective.

    **Hiking & experiencing nature:**
Whether it’s a gentle winter hike or a guided torchlit walk – in the snowy forest you’ll feel calm and breathe in the crisp air. From the Harzturm near Torfhaus or from the HEX Adventure World, you can enjoy wide views over the mountains.

    **Historic charm & culture:**
Towns like Wernigerode, Quedlinburg or Goslar impress with romantic timber-framed houses, atmospheric alleys and small museums – perfect for a quiet stroll on the last day of the year.

    **Wellness & relaxation:**
Many hotels in the Harz offer you wellness treatments on New Year’s Eve: sauna, spa or whirlpool are ready for you. After an active morning, you can relax here and let the day wind down.

Remember to plan ahead. Popular accommodations and offers quickly get fully booked around New Year’s Eve. For trips and excursions in the Harz, you should have winter tyres, weatherproof clothing and possibly snow chains with you.
- Which events can you visit on New Year’s Eve?

At the turn of the year, you can experience many public events in the Harz. Whether it’s music and dancing at a New Year’s Eve party, a torchlight hike in the snow or a themed evening – the variety of events suits different interests.

Many events offer live music, buffets, midnight champagne and fireworks, often outdoors. In numerous towns in the Harz, there are restrictions on private fireworks to protect historic old towns and nature. Instead, central fireworks or alternative light events create a festive atmosphere.

The Harz therefore offers opportunities for everyone who wants to spend the turn of the year actively, sociably or quietly in a winter setting.
- How long are the Christmas markets open?

Some of the romantic Christmas markets are still open around New Year’s Eve, such as the Altenau Winter Market, the Winter Meeting in Bad Harzburg, the Braunlage Winter Market, the Western Winter in the western town Pullman City Harz in Hasselfelde, the Seesen Festival of Lights, the Nativity Christmas in Wieda, and the Winter Wonderland in the “Echter Nordhäuser Traditionsbrennerei” in Nordhausen.
- New Year’s Eve with your dog!

Many dogs have great problems with firecrackers and the noise on New Year’s Eve. In the Harz Mountains, the new year is also welcomed with fireworks. Still, there’s the chance to spend a somewhat more relaxed New Year here than in the big German cities. For the protection of the historic half-timbered houses, fireworks are not allowed in the old towns of Goslar, Wernigerode and Quedlinburg, among others. However, it’s not entirely quiet there either. The Harz National Park has a general fireworks ban, but there are no accommodation options there. The dog-friendly could therefore be a good starting point.
- When there’s snow in the Harz!

When there’s enough snow in the Harz Mountains, the region turns into a true winter sports paradise. Whether you’re looking for fast-paced ski action, peaceful cross-country skiing, or family-friendly tobogganing – there’s something for everyone.

**Alpine skiing** is especially popular on the Wurmberg in Braunlage – at the largest ski area in northern Germany, you’ll find several slopes, lifts, and a snow-covered piste waiting for you. The Matthias-Schmidt-Berg and Sonnenberg near St. Andreasberg, as well as Bocksberg in Hahnenklee, are also perfect for both beginners and advanced skiers.

**Cross-country skiers** will find an extensive network of trails in the Upper Harz – more than 500 km of groomed tracks, for example around Torfhaus, Oderbrück, Sonnenberg, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, or Buntenbock. Many routes pass through the snow-covered Harz National Park – you can choose between classic style and skating.

**Tobogganing** is possible in almost every winter sports resort: on the 1.6 km natural toboggan run on the Wurmberg, on the Bocksberg with its sled express, or on smaller slopes in Bad Sachsa, Schierke, or Hohegeiß. Some runs are illuminated – perfect for night tobogganing.

**Winter and snowshoe hikes** lead through fairy-tale forests and offer stunning views, for example around the Brocken or on the Goethe Trail. Guided torchlight tours are also very popular.

**Ice skating** is possible in the Braunlage ice stadium or in the ice sports hall of the Salztal Paradise in Bad Sachsa – with skate hire and ice discos.

In winter, the Harz shows its full variety – active, close to nature, and family-friendly.

New Year’s Eve in the Harz Mountains is very popular – the options range from individual holiday homes and family-friendly guesthouses to atmospheric hotel packages. Demand is high, and many accommodations are already well booked 5–7 months in advance – so it’s highly recommended to book your trip early.
