Car-free travel in the Harz

Discover the Harz sustainably and comfortably by public transport. You can reach many places on the edge of the Harz by train. With the regional buses, you can travel further into the Harz and often overcome considerable differences in altitude. Combine your hikes and excursions in the Harz relaxedly with the bus. This way, you get to know the region consciously and at a slower pace while contributing to climate protection. With the Harz Holiday Ticket (HATIX), you can even travel free of charge as an overnight guest in one of the participating towns by bus and tram in the Harz – perfect for a car-free holiday.

HATIX - The Harz Holiday Ticket

Free mobility in the Harz

HATIX

The HATIX – the Harz holiday ticket – allows overnight guests, after paying the visitor’s tax or guest contribution in one of the participating Harz towns, to use the public bus and tram lines free of charge in the districts of Harz, Goslar, Göttingen and Mansfeld-Südharz. (In the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz and Göttingen, HATIX is only valid on selected routes.)

**These Harz towns take part in the HATIX system:**

You will receive the HATIX if you stay overnight in one of the following towns and pay the guest contribution or visitor’s tax there: Bad Grund, Bad Harzburg, Bad Lauterberg, Ballenstedt, Blankenburg, Braunlage, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Goslar, Halberstadt, Hahnenklee, Harzgerode, Ilsenburg, Langelsheim, Bergstadt Lautenthal, Oberharz am Brocken, Osterode am Harz, World Heritage Town Quedlinburg, Seesen, Thale, Walkenried, Wernigerode, Wieda, Wolfshagen am Harz and Zorge.

Frequently asked questions about HATIX
--------------------------------------

- Who can use HATIX?

    - Overnight guests staying in a town participating in the HATIX system and paying the guest contribution will receive a guest card or registration form, which allows them to use HATIX.
    - Annual guest card holders from selected municipalities in the districts of Goslar and Göttingen can also use buses and trams free of charge for the number of trips marked on the annual guest card.
    - Guests who are exempt from paying the guest or spa contribution do not receive a guest card or registration form with the HATIX logo, nor a ticket.
- How do I get HATIX?

When arriving at your accommodation, you pay the guest contribution and receive a ticket booklet or guest card with an integrated registration form, which is marked as HATIX and carries the HATIX logo. In some places, there are also digital options.
- Where is HATIX valid?

In the districts of Harz, Goslar, Göttingen and Mansfeld-Südharz, HATIX allows free use of public bus and tram lines. (In the districts of Mansfeld Südharz and Göttingen, HATIX is only valid on selected routes.)

The additional ticket “HATIX+ Rail South Harz” complements the Harz holiday ticket HATIX by including use of regional trains on the routes Walkenried – Herzberg (Harz) – Wulften (RB 80 / RB 81) and Herzberg (Harz) – Osterode am Harz – Seesen (RB 46). The additional “HATIX+ Rail South Harz” tickets are sold both at ticket machines at the relevant stations and on buses in the South Harz region (Bad Grund, Osterode, Herzberg, Bad Lauterberg, Bad Sachsa and Walkenried).

*Attention:* The HATIX is not valid for trains of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen.
- What is “HATIX+ Rail South Harz”?

The additional ticket “HATIX+ Rail South Harz” complements the Harz holiday ticket HATIX by including the use of the regional train on the route sections Walkenried – Herzberg (Harz) – Wulften (RB 80 / RB 81) as well as Herzberg (Harz) – Osterode am Harz – Seesen (RB 46). The price for the day ticket is €3 for the first person and €1.50 for each additional person (up to four additional people). The additional “HATIX+ Rail South Harz” tickets are sold both at ticket machines at the affected stations and on the buses in the South Harz area (Bad Grund, Osterode, Herzberg, Bad Lauterberg, Bad Sachsa and Walkenried). These are exactly the buses that also sell tickets for the Harz transition fare and the (Verkehrsverbund Region Braunschweig GmbH) VRB.

**From 01/01/2026** the ticket will be valid free of charge in an extended area: Bad Harzburg – Oker – Goslar – Langelsheim – Seesen – Münchehof – Gittelde – Osterode – Herzberg as well as the South Harz route between Wulften and Walkenried. Therefore, the ticket will then be valid on these route sections:

    - DB Regio lines RB 80/81:  Walkenried – Bad Sachsa – Bad Lauterberg / Barbis – Herzberg – Hattorf – Wulften
    - DB Regio line RB 46:  Herzberg – Osterode – Gittelde / Bad Grund – Münchehof – Seesen

It is valid for the entire stay for all persons listed on it.
(Note: The fields for total number of persons, arrival date and departure date must be filled in).
- Is HATIX valid on the day of arrival / before it is issued?

HATIX is not valid before the guest card is issued. You can only use it from the moment you receive the ticket booklet or guest card with registration form and have filled it in.
- Is HATIX transferable?

No, the ticket is only valid for the persons listed on the registration form.
- Am I allowed to take my bicycle with me?

HATIX allows free transport of passengers. Bicycles and luggage can be taken along free of charge if there is enough capacity, while wheelchairs, walking aids and prams have priority. In case of doubt, the transport staff will decide. On trains, a bicycle day ticket is required for bicycles.
- Does HATIX apply to day visitors (without overnight stay)?

No – without an overnight stay and without having paid the guest contribution, there is no entitlement to HATIX.

However, if you have a valid Germany Ticket, you can still use public transport in the Harz region – but not the trains of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) between Drei Annen Hohne and Brocken, and not long-distance trains (IC, EC, ICE).
- What do I need to take with me when travelling with HATIX?

The guest card or the completed ticket booklet with registration form as well as an ID for identification.
