BERG-MANNS-BILDER - Mining Tradition and the Modern Folklore Movement in the Harz Mountains

The image of the Harz miner—with his moss cap, leather apron, and miner’s lamp—has been cultivated over the centuries. Nearly 100 years after the end of active mining, the Upper Harz miner remains an integral part of a mining heritage worthy of preservation. Whether in views of the Harz Mountains or in the flash of the first photographic pioneers underground, at mining parades, or as part of the so-called Upper Harz folk costumes of the 20th-century folk customs movement, cultural historian Ulrich Reiff traces the evolution of these images of miners.
