The total length from Lamspringe to Bad Gandersheim is about 12 km with slight inclines. The path offers fantastic panoramic views of the landscape. Anyone who is tired or thirsty, or needs refreshment, should take time for one of the many hospitable rest stops along the way.
The Sculpture Trail is part of a railway track that was once closed from Bad Gandersheim to Bodenburg and from there still extends to Hildesheim today. The paved route from Bad Gandersheim to Lamspringe is called the "Sculpture Trail." All sculptures were funded exclusively by private individuals or foundations.
Visitors will notice the impressive monastery church of Lamspringe, visible from afar. Restored half-timbered buildings, the extensive monastery park, and the baroque monastery church along with the adjacent Benedictine monastery shape the town's appearance. The monastery was founded in the year 847 by the Saxon count Ricdag. In the 17th century, the Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim handed the monastery over to English Benedictine monks. They first rebuilt the hall church before constructing the abbey and convent buildings. The monastery church of Lamspringe is one of the region's outstanding attractions with its magnificent interior and baroque furnishings. A small river, the Lamme, which gives Lamspringe its name, originates in the monastery park. Besides ponds and a lush tree population, the park also contains some modern sculptures. Artists who have received a work scholarship live and work in the monastery mill, converted into a studio on the edge of the park. Once a year, the monastery comes into the spotlight: International artists gather for the "Lamspringe September."
