The highest in the north
at 1,141 metres above sea level and with an impressive view!
Even from a great distance, the Brocken rises 1,141 metres above sea level from the North German plain, making it the highest point in the Harz Mountains. Its distinctive summit is often shrouded in mist and is part of many legends.
For as long as anyone can remember, wind and weather have met on the open summit plateau. Banks of fog create ever-changing light effects, in which optical illusions such as the so-called Brocken Spectre can appear. The mountain is closely linked to old stories and mystical figures that still play a role in many encounters on the summit today.
There are several ways to reach the Brocken. The most comfortable option is to take the Brocken Railway to the top. Hikers will find several well-marked routes to the summit, and mountain bikers also use it as a destination. From Schierke, it's also possible to take a horse-drawn carriage up the mountain.
