Experience Earth's history in the Harz
In the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen, you can take short hikes through millions of years of Earth’s history.
The Geopark stretches from the Mansfelder Land in the east to the municipality of Kalefeld in the west. It lies within the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The area includes the entire Harz, its adjoining foothills and the Braunschweiger Land further to the north. There you’ll find geological structures with salt domes as well as deposits of iron ore and lignite.
In the Harz and its foothills, sediments, volcanic rocks and karst formations meet. The region looks back on more than 1,000 years of mining and research history. On the northern edge of the Harz lies the internationally renowned “Classical Square Mile of Geology”. Its uplift zone reveals deposits dating from 65 to 250 million years ago.
Since 2015, the Geopark has borne the title UNESCO Global Geopark. You can find detailed information about individual landmarks at www.harzregion.de.
