CistercianMuseum Walkenried Monastery

Walkenried Monastery is the oldest part of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz. Inside the Gothic walls you’ll find a modern museum that appeals to visitors of all generations.

Here you’ll get to know the Cistercian monks as faithful but also economically minded people. You’ll find out how progressive they were in their actions and way of life during the Middle Ages. On a guided tour or with the AudioGuide, you can explore the abbey’s history – children have their own audio programme, too. School classes discover the museum together as “Little Monks for a Time”.

During the darker months, guided tours through the cloister illuminated by candles are offered, and they’re also accessible. At the end of September, the Walkenried Abbey Market takes place on the abbey grounds in front of the impressive church ruins.
