The Harz Region:

A Place to Feel Good

Background

[Translate to English:] Logo Nachhaltiger Harz...kein Hexenwerk

Sustainability has been playing an increasingly important role for years – including in tourism. It’s about the interplay of social, ecological, and economic responsibility. Only when all three areas are taken into account can tourism bring long-term benefits for nature and local people.
In the Harz, the effects of climate change are clearly visible, especially in the forests. Waste left in nature, as well as events such as forest fires and floods, also show how strongly environmental changes are affecting the region. The region wants to counter these developments and take responsibility.

Under the motto "Sustainable Harz... no magic required", we want to work on expanding the sustainable offers in our region and gradually move towards greater sustainability. With the sustainability concept specially designed for the Harz and its tourism stakeholders, the foundation has been laid.
Locals and guests can already enjoy many sustainably certified offers such as accommodation, cuisine, or mobility with a good feeling – and we want to build on that!

Enjoy the Harz with a good feeling

We’re setting off…

The Harz region is already on its way towards greater sustainability – and you can be part of it. In the region, you’ll find many options that handle the environment and resources responsibly.

These include accommodation with sustainability certification, culinary experiences with the “Typisch Harz” regional brand, and the opportunity to get around locally with the HATIX ticket. The partners of the Harz National Park and the Karst Landscape South Harz Biosphere Reserve also invite you to experience nature consciously – together with the so-called NatureExplainers.

Concept Sustainable Harz

Sustainability is not a state you can achieve. It’s more about your attitude and your openness to continuous development.

That’s why we don’t want to rest on the current situation but rather build on the existing foundation for sustainable tourism in the Harz. The basis for this has been created with the sustainability concept tailored to the Harz, which serves as a practical guide for us and our partners to discover ways to enhance the experience of sustainability on site. This makes the often abstract topic of sustainability tangible.

So: A sustainable Harz... no magic required!

To-do lists

Our to-do lists are specifically designed for businesses operating in tourism in the Harz region. They help you identify your current status and offer plenty of small and big suggestions for you.

Tourism involves a wide range of different players. To make sure everyone can find something useful, the to-do lists focus on individual core components of tourism companies, which you can combine like a modular system according to your own needs.

Guidelines with contacts

The will is there, but the beginning is hard? Here you’ll find examples and direct contacts that practically complete the to-do lists above.
