Michaelstein Monastery

Michaelstein Monastery was founded in 1146 and is located near Blankenburg. Today, the Cultural Foundation of Saxony‑Anhalt uses the buildings as a monastery museum and music academy. Visitors can enjoy concerts, exhibitions, and events here that combine various cultural fields.

In the monastery museum, you’ll discover a world of history, gardens, and music. While walking through the cloister, refectory, and chapter hall, you’ll get a sense of the simple architecture of a Cistercian abbey.

Two monastery gardens are modelled on medieval designs. In the herb and vegetable garden, plants grow that were once used for food and healing. The music exhibition “KlangZeitRaum – Tracing the Secret of Music” invites you to try out experiments and sound samples.
