Herbergsmuseum - Historical Hostel Museum Blankenburg

Built in 1684, the half-timbered house in the heart of the old town served as a hostel for traveling journeymen from 1884 to 1916. This use coincided with the period of extensive building activity in Blankenburg due to the settlement of many boarders. The most prominent guest in 1884/1885 was the journeyman carpenter and later first president of the GDR Wilhelm Pieck. This makes it the only historical journeymen's hostel in Germany that is open to the public as a museum. In addition to the former hostel environment with its inner courtyard, wash house, stable, hostel kitchen, lodging and restaurant rooms, it also houses an exhibition on the journeymen's travels. Vivid documents, illustrations and material witnesses provide an insight into the customs associated with journeymen's wanderings.
