Founded in 1146 Michaelstein is well away from the city life situated in an idyllic Harz remoteness. The monastery flourished in the Middle Ages. In 1543 it was dissolved and used as a monastery school and seminary. Today the Music Academy of Saxony-Anhalt for Education and Performance has its headquarters here. The monastery offers year-round events and is a popular destination along the Romanesque Road. Admire in the cloister, the refectory and the chapter hall the impressive simplicity of Cistercian architecture. Two monastery gardens were modelled on medieval plans and invite you to explore nature. In the unique music exhibition "KlangZeitRaum" (SoundTimeRoom) one goes on an exciting journey through the music and their instruments.
