Samson Mine

Show mine
The former Silver mine Samson (Grube Samson), is one of Germany's most important mountain monuments.
The 810 meters deep shaft is the only one open in the Harz Mountains and passable to a depth of 190 meters. Admire two waterwheels, a Kehrrad (reversible water wheel), with a nine meter diameter with brake wheel and two cable drums for mineral exploration. Another highlight is the 12 meter diameter water wheel, an authentic reconstruction, which was used to drive the man engine - one of the last of its kind. Find a collection of minerals, models of historic workings in the museum and much more. The visitors' gallery pit "Catharina Neufang" conveys the work of the miners in the 16th century. Visit also the "Harzer Roller" Canary Museum and learn about the Harz-bred canary and its links to the mining history of the Harz Mountains.
