The weather at the summit
Although the Brocken, at 1,141 metres, is relatively low, its summit already lies above the natural tree line. The climate here is harsh and dominated by the weather. The summit is shrouded in fog on around 300 days per year, and snow remains on the ground for about 178 days.
The average temperature in July is 10.3 °C and in January –4.2 °C. Over the course of a year, an average of 1,814 millimetres of precipitation falls. The Brocken’s climate is therefore similar to the conditions in Iceland or in the Alps at altitudes between 2,000 and 2,200 metres.
The summit of the Brocken is also considered the windiest place in Germany and Central Europe. On average, the wind reaches around six Beaufort, or 42 kilometres per hour. Hurricane-strength gusts are recorded on more than 100 days per year, and the highest recorded wind speed was approximately 263 kilometres per hour on 24 November 1984.
