At an elevation of 300–350 meters above sea level, the picturesque climatic health resort of Altenbrak stretches for nearly two kilometers along the Bode River, surrounded by meadows and forests.
Set in the gentle, yet at times rugged landscape of the Bode Valley, Altenbrak offers a wide range of opportunities for relaxation and recreation along its numerous hiking, therapeutic exercise, and walking trails. The distinct low-mountain climate is characterized by numerous health-promoting properties and creates particularly favorable conditions for climate therapy.
At the same time, the health resort is an ideal starting point for excursions to the historic towns in the surrounding area. Every year from June through September, theater and music festivals take place at the forest stage, a venue set in a uniquely scenic location.
The mountain swimming pool with its large sunbathing lawn, a playground and sports complex featuring mini-golf, chess, tennis, table tennis, soccer, volleyball, streetball, and badminton, as well as an inline skating track and an adventure playground, offer relaxation, fun, and variety for all ages. The local history museum, with its dollhouse exhibition, offers a glimpse into the town’s history. Passionate anglers will find their paradise along the Bode River—and, with a little luck, the Harz brook trout as well.
The origins of Altenbrak likely date back to the heyday of mining between the 12th and 15th centuries. On July 1, 2009, the municipality was incorporated into the town of Thale. Since then, Altenbrak, along with Allrode, Almsfeld, Friedrichsbrunn, Neinstedt, Stecklenberg, Treseburg, Warnstedt, Weddersleben, Wendefurth, and Westerhausen, has been part of the Bodetal vacation region.
