Architectural diversity, one of the best-preserved city fortifications in Germany, modern art, parks and gardens, as well as attractive cultural and leisure activities, all invite you to take a trip to Aschersleben! The oldest city in Saxony-Anhalt is known as the gateway to the Harz Mountains; beautifully located in the heartland of German history between the Otto City of Magdeburg, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Quedlinburg, and the Handel City of Halle.
Around the old town with its monuments stand the towers of the former city fortifications. They are considered the most valuable part of the city’s architectural heritage. In the centre, several parks and gardens invite you to stay for a while. They are part of the state project “Garden Dreams” and combine historical and modern design. Among these are the Promenade Ring, Herrenbreite, Bestehorn Park, the Rosarium, the City Park, and the Eine Terrace.
Concerts, theatre and cabaret shows, as well as changing exhibitions, shape Aschersleben’s cultural calendar. Art lovers can discover the graphic works of the artist Neo Rauch or visit the “Drive Thru Gallery” – the first gallery in Germany that you can admire as you drive past.
A visit to Aschersleben is also worthwhile for its leisure facilities. The zoo is home to Siberian and – uniquely in eastern Germany – white tigers. In the museum you can find the famous mammoth ear and the only walk-in Masonic temple in Germany. The Criminal Panopticon in the former city prison hosts exhibitions about Sherlock Holmes and historical crime stories.
