The mountain town of Lautenthal, over 800 years old, is a state-recognised climatic health resort in the Innerste Valley. Surrounded by mixed forests and mountain meadows, it lies in a side valley of the Innerste River.
You can go hiking here on a network of trails covering about 200 kilometres. The routes lead through natural forests, across meadows and along clear streams. On guided tours, such as the herb walk or an evening and torch hike, you can learn interesting facts about the plants and landscape of the Harz Mountains.
The Mining Museum Lautenthal’s Glück gives you insights into the history of mining. It is one of the oldest still accessible mines in the Upper Harz. The mine railway takes you to the main shaft, the St. Barbara Chapel, the drilling site and other stations of former mining operations. In the 450-year-old drainage tunnel of the silver mine, you can experience on an approximately 150-metre boat trip how ore used to be transported underground. The so-called ore barge harbour, often called “Venice underground”, is used for festivals and events.
The Brewery Museum is also open to visitors. In a half-timbered house decorated with carvings, the rooms of the old brewery show how beer was brewed here.
Just a few minutes from Lautenthal lies the Innerste Reservoir. The soft, cool water is ideal for swimming, sailing, surfing, rowing, fishing and pedal boating. On land, you can skate, jog or cycle along the dam. The campsite on the peninsula offers pitches directly by the water. A marked hiking route "Around the Innerste Reservoir" takes you all around the lake.
In Lautenthal you’ll also find a forest outdoor pool with a beach volleyball court, a forest fitness trail and access to the Volksbank Arena Harz trail network. In winter, there are groomed cross-country tracks, several toboggan slopes and paths for winter hikes.
