Schierke is a district of Wernigerode. It lies at an altitude of 580 to 640 metres in the valley of the Kalte Bode, directly below the legendary Brocken and right in the middle of the Harz National Park. Here you will find many opportunities for hiking, outdoor activities and winter sports.
In the spa gardens, you can discover botanical treasures. In the “Old Pharmacy”, the original home of Schierker Feuerstein, you can learn a bit about the village’s history.
Circular hiking trails lead you to the 1,141 metre-high Brocken or along the Kalte Bode. Along the way, you’ll see striking rock formations such as the Mauseklippen, Feuersteinklippen, Schnarcherklippen and the Ahrensklint. This way, you can experience Schierke’s rocky landscape step by step.
A ride on the Harz Narrow-Gauge Railways takes you from Wernigerode via Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke up to the Brocken. If you prefer to stay on the ground, the Brocken Coaster offers a shorter but equally exciting ride.
Between Schierke and the Wurmberg lies an area nicknamed the “mountain bike swing” because of its location. Here you’ll find tours with different levels of difficulty, short and long climbs, as well as open summit views. There are also suitable trails and routes for Nordic walkers and climbers in the area.
In winter, you can use well-prepared cross-country skiing tracks and solid winter hiking paths. In and around Schierke, several toboggan runs provide variety. The Schierke Winter Sports Weeks with a diverse programme are a fixed date on the calendar. You can find more details on the winter sports page.
The Schierke Feuerstein Arena is open for you all year round. The open-air area can be used for many different activities.
