Directions
From the central hiking trail signpost tree at the large car park in Altenbrak, follow the upstream signs Wendefurth / Rübeland (green witch). Along the way you pass historic old mining sites, go under a historic water bridge, and at the end of Altenbrak you reach a trout breeding facility with dining opportunities.
From here, you continue always along the Bode River to Wendefurth, where you cross Federal Highway B 81 to reach the Wendefurth reservoir. Over the dam, the path continues upwards on the Harz Witches' Trail to Kuhberg with a shelter. The now gently descending hiking trail runs along the spur of the Wendefurth reservoir and then upstream past the slate mountain and disused quarries.
In Neuwerk you cross the Bode and initially walk on the village street, then continue on the hiking trail parallel to the village street until you reach the district of Kreuztal. Continue on the Philosopher’s Path to Rübeland, where you first pass the Hermann Cave and then cross the railway crossing to the center of the village and the Baumann Cave.
