The Granestausee is one of the youngest dams in the Harz, but with a size of 2.19 km² and a maximum volume of 46.39 million m³, it is among the largest. Like the Innerste Dam and the Oker Dam, the power of water was used early on to drive, for example, the stamp mills in mining. Today, they serve for drinking water production, power generation, and flood protection.

Directions

Your hike starts above the holiday park in Hahnenklee, at the very end of Triftstraße, corner of Hahnenkleer Bergstraße. Here you have direct access and hike down the forest path to Tetschwasserstraße. At the intersection ahead, take the path on the right straight ahead towards Diestelplatz. Upon arriving at the square, Weidentalstraße begins half-right. This takes you to a fork in the road, which you follow left. Via a hairpin bend, you then come to a branch of the Granestausee. From now on you walk along the path by the lake and have occasional views of the reservoir. Only a few benches and a shelter offer space for a break. At the confluence of the Granebach into the Granestausee, turn right onto the paved road and climb along the Granebach towards Hahnenklee. On the path "2Q green triangle" you can discover the Graneblockhaus and the Alex spring. At the height of the Graneblockhaus (stamp point 111), continue climbing on the path "2F red dot". If you then take the steep path to the right at the stamp mill square up to the Hexenbank, you have a wonderful view over the Harz foothills. From here you walk past the Langeliether Graben hut and reach the starting point of your hike.
