Mining ponds between mountain meadows and forests – these are the Buntenbocker ponds near Clausthal.
The total of 5 ponds were created for supplying water to the Rosenhöfer mining district. They are connected to each other by water pipelines above and below ground. The Rosenhöfer district was one of the most important mining districts in the Upper Harz and required a lot of water for its water wheels.
The circular route is 5 kilometers long. This signposted WasserWanderWeg starts at the Sumpfteich pond in Buntenbock and goes to the Pixhaier Mühle forest hotel. You can eat and drink at the restaurant. You can also park there.
Along your hike, you will pass various info boards. They explain why the ponds were built 10 kilometers away from the Rosenhöfer district and how the storage ponds functioned.
Throughout the route, you will have repeated wonderful views of the high plateau around Buntenbock.

Directions
The path starts at the shore of the Sumpfteich pond in Buntenbock (Pixhaier Weg). From here, cross over the dam of the pond. At the next fork, turn left onto the forest path. The path leads directly to the dam of the Ziegenberger pond. Feel free to walk over the dam and back. Then turn left onto the Ziegenberg path. The path goes along the Ziegenberger pond to the Bärenbrucher pond.
Cross the dam and continue straight ahead. This takes you to the edge of the Prahljust campsite. Walk past the campsite to the Pixhaier pond. Hike over the dam and then turn left. This will take you directly to the dam of the Schwarzenbacher pond. Walk over the dam here again. Directly afterwards, turn left again and go down to the Pixhaier Mühle inn.
From the restaurant's parking lot, a path leads directly back to Buntenbock where you started your hike.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
On hot summer days, take your swimwear with you on the hike. At the Ziegenberger pond there is an official swimming area where you can wonderfully cool off after the hike.
