Mining Experience Röhrigschacht Wettelrode

The Röhrig Mine in Wettelrode is one of the few tourist mines where visitors can still experience a real cable ride. Using Germany’s oldest steel hoisting frame still in operation and the original hoisting engine, guests are transported 283 meters underground in a mine car to the mine train. From there, the mine train takes them about 1,000 meters further into a former mining area, where visitors can experience the history of copper-shale mining in a uniquely authentic and unspoiled setting! The extremely low mining heights of 40 and 80 cm, respectively, give a clear sense of the difficult working conditions faced by the miners.
The above-ground museum showcases the 825-year history of Mansfeld copper-shale mining.
In addition to the 75-minute standard guided tours, 4–8-hour underground tours through the old mine and into the adits offer unforgettable and thrilling experiences.

The underground exhibition mine at the Röhrigschacht Wettelrode Mining Experience Center will be closed to visitors from November 9 through November 26, 2026, due to repair and maintenance work.
The above-ground mining museum will be open on November 14–15 and November 21–22, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
