Seesen

On the western edge of the Harz lies the town of Seesen, which is more than 1,000 years old. Well-known figures such as Wilhelm Busch, Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg – later H.E. Steinway – and composer Louis Spohr once lived here.

Seesen owes its nickname “Window to the Harz” to a project that originated as part of a student thesis. Along a city tour, seven pieces of seating furniture invite you to take a break and enjoy views of historical buildings. Through these seven “windows”, you can see, among other things, the Wilhelm Busch sculpture, the baroque St. Andreas Church, the Municipal Museum with its exhibition on tin can production and honorary citizen William Steinway, the district court in the Sehusa Castle, the Ratskeller, the St. Vitus Tower, the old writing school, the community centre, and the Koch’sche Hof from 1674.

Away from the city tour, you can visit the Wilhelm Busch House in the district of Mechtshausen. The illustrator and poet spent the last ten years of his life in this vicarage. Today it displays personal items and works from his late creative period.

If you’re looking for physical activity, you’ll find plenty of options at the Sehusa Water World. There you’ll find a swimming area with a diving platform, a children’s pool with magic slide and pirate ship, a saltwater pool, a natural pool, a sauna area as well as a large outdoor area with a sun deck, mud play corner, beach sports area and mini golf course.

Since 1975, the Sehusa Festival has been celebrated on the first weekend of September. More than 1,000 residents re‑enact scenes from the town’s history in historical costumes with dances and games. This historical festival is considered the largest of its kind in northern Germany.

Seesen also offers many opportunities for hiking and cycling enthusiasts. You can join guided hikes, visit the mini‑golf course, get active at the fitness and activity park in Steinway Park, or explore the trail network of Volksbank Arena Harz as well as the D3 and R1 cycle routes. A new addition is the Steinway Trail, a cultural‑historical hiking path that follows the footsteps of the Steinway family between Wolfshagen and Seesen.
