Sondershausen

Music and mining in living tradition

Sondershausen is a town for everyone who wants to combine culture and nature. The renovated town centre, the Residenzschloss in the centre, as well as numerous music events and festivals, shape the life of the town.

A highlight every year is the musical theatre of the Thuringian Castle Festival Sondershausen. It takes place against the historic backdrop of the former residence palace of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and is considered the most famous open-air festival in the tri-border area of Thuringia, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The castle combines architectural styles from the Renaissance to Historicism and houses the Castle Museum with the Golden Coach.

If you are looking for activity and nature, visit the Possen with the highest half-timbered tower in Europe or the Straußberg with its monkey forest and summer toboggan run. In the Adventure Mine, your trip takes you 700 metres deep underground. Through the rock salt and across the brine lake, you can travel by vehicle and boat. Here you will also find the deepest concert hall in the world, where music regularly fills the air.
