Sondershausen Castle Museum

For many centuries, Sondershausen Castle was the residence of the Counts and Princes of Schwarzburg, the rulers of the small Thuringian state.
In addition to historically recreated rooms (e.g., the amateur theater, the castle chapel, and the vault at the Wendelstein), the castle museum features the Schwarzburg ancestral gallery, various sections on regional and local history, and parts of the Schwarzburg art collections. A rarity is the Golden Carriage, a state carriage from the early 18th century. Sondershausen’s long musical tradition is also highlighted in an exhibition featuring, among other things, significant musical instruments. The “Gallery in the Castle” hosts exhibitions of contemporary art.

Special tip: The Golden Carriage is a ceremonial carriage from the early 18th century and belongs to the French “grand carosse” type. It is the oldest model of this type on German soil. Comparable examples can now only be found in the major European carriage collections in Lisbon, Stockholm, London, and St. Petersburg.
