Torfhaus lies 812 metres above sea level, making it the highest village in Lower Saxony within the Harz National Park. It is part of the Upper Harz region. Surrounded by the varied landscape of the national park, the village offers direct access to numerous hiking trails and opportunities to experience nature. The Goetheweg trail, a walk to the Wolfswarte or through the vast Torfhausmoor, as well as the forest walking trail, invite you to explore nature in the Harz National Park in both summer and winter.
At the National Park Visitor Centre, you can find comprehensive information about the area’s flora and fauna. You can also take part in guided tours through the moorland here or go for a walk along the Goethe Trail.
The 65-metre-high Harz Tower dominates the townscape. Several panoramic viewing platforms offer sweeping views across the Harz mountain range. On the glass-bottomed Skywalk or on the ‘Rasantia’ adventure slide, you can experience the heights in different ways. You can reach the tower either by lift or on foot.
During the colder months, Torfhaus transforms into a winter sports centre with toboggan runs. Whether you’re cross-country skiing or tobogganing – the conditions on the various trails and slopes are perfectly suited to these activities.
