Marketplace - Word - Wordgarten - Schiffbleek - Brühlstraße - Wipertistraße - Hüttenweg - Hasenköpfe - Altenburg - Kammweg - Altenburgwarte - Wipertistraße - Mühlenstraße - Schlossberg - Finkenherd - Lange Gasse - Hohe Straße - Blasiistraße - Marketplace

The route starts directly at the marketplace. We leave it heading south and walk through Word street, Wordgarten to the Brühl. In Word, we pass one of the oldest fully preserved half-timbered houses in central Germany. At the entrance to the Brühl is the flood marker stone from 1925. We follow Brühlstraße and turn right after the small bridge. After 50 / 60 m, we have a nice view over the Abteigarten to Schlossberg and Münzenberg. Then we pass the former horticultural technical school (now an external branch of ZAST) and leave the town via Hüttenweg. Before we ascend to Altenburg, you can see our vineyard on the right. We now follow the circular hiking trail R1 and go up over the Hasenköpfe to Altenburg. From the field watchtower, you have a beautiful view of the town and the Harz foothills. About 150 m behind the watchtower is another viewpoint with a bench and a view of the collegiate church. Then the descent begins soon. The last stretch goes very steeply down. Please be extremely careful crossing the street! Now we turn left and follow Wipertistraße into town. Along the way, we pass Salzberg, the Arschkerbe, and Wiperti cemetery (crypt complex and Wiperti church with a very old crypt) and walk straight to the roundabout. Via Mühlenstraße, Schlossberg, Finkenherd, and Blasiistraße we return to the marketplace.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The Altenburgwarte - watchtower from the 14th century - is now accessible as a viewing tower.
A spiral staircase with 51 granite steps leads up to the tower.
The lower part is completely dark!
Mobile phone or flashlight recommended.

Geological feature: "Arschkerbe"
Shortly before the Wiperti cemetery you can take a deep look into the earth's history. To the left and right of the road, we see inclined sandstone layers. During the uplift of the Harz, the former seabed was raised here.
