Circular route (approx. 7.5 km)

This relatively short circular route passes through a section of the roughly 30-kilometer-long Teufelsmauer trail by probably the most striking part of the bizarre sandstone formation between Weddersleben and Warnstedt. Along a two-kilometer stretch, the Königstein, the Mittelsteine, and the Papensteine line up.

Directions

The starting point of this circular hike is the Teufelsmauer car park at the Bode bridge between Weddersleben and Neinstedt, where you follow the Teufelsmauer signposting (Devil marking).

Shortly afterwards the path leads uphill to the right and passes the Teufelsmauergarten on the left, where the remarkable flora of the Teufelsmauer and its nearby surroundings, protected since 1852, has been planted.

After a short ascent, you reach the Teufelsmauer with the Königstein. From here you enjoy a magnificent view of the wooded edge of the Harz and the northern Harz foreland, as well as the northern town of Weddersleben. The path leads down again via a wooden staircase and further on past the Mittelsteine. At the end of the path you reach the paved Thalenser Chaussee, where you turn right after a few meters to reach the Papensteine after a slight climb.

Following the path along the stones, you soon reach an asphalted farm road where you follow the signposting Thale / Neinstedt (Kaiserkrone marking) to the left. Upon reaching the outskirts of Thale, a visit to the Wendhusen Monastery about 500 meters away is recommended, which has an interesting history.

The return route to the starting point of the hike (Teufelsmauer car park) leads along the path by the Bode, signposted towards Neinstedt / Weddersleben.
