  • Start: Various starting points possible. Starting point No. 1 in the Gandersheim city center, Stiftsfreiheit parking lot
  • Destination: Circular route with the possibility to use other entry and exit points as well.
The route runs almost exclusively on paved field and forest paths and on secondary roads. It offers many beautiful views of the Heberbörde and the Harz foothills.

The beautiful nature and the opportunity to get to know the culture and history of the town and some districts during a break are appealing.

Already at starting point No. 1 you have the opportunity to experience Gandersheim’s history, for example, with a walk through the old town, as a guest in the city museum, or by visiting the Romanesque collegiate church with the exhibition “Discovering treasures anew”.

Another highlight on the route awaits you at the monastery and summer palace Brunshausen. Here is the founding place of the Gandersheim chapter and in the former monastery church and summer palace, the two exhibitions of the Museum Portal to History are located.

Directions

The start is in the city center in front of the collegiate church, the landmark of Bad Gandersheim. Out of town in an easterly direction along Bismarckstraße, we cross the traffic light intersection and after about 200 m turn right to Wrescherode. On the street it goes to the Domäne Schachtenbeck, where we turn right. The street becomes a field path to the forest and then turns left. It now runs along the edge of the forest at Äbtissinberg (height 274 m) and after 1.2 km turns left. From there, we reach the country road to Ellierode. We ride up the street and then turn left to Harriehausen. We go under the railway line to the main street, then turn right and after about 100 m left towards Hachenhausen. Behind the bridge turn right to the sports field. Behind the sports field, we turn left. Our next destination is Hachenhausen. We ride left through the town to the main street, then right to federal road 64, then right again onto the bike path to Dannhausen. At the village entrance, we leave the bike path, ride through the town and then turn left uphill to the Heber (steep climb! 20%). After about 1.2 km, we turn left. This path offers a wonderful panorama. At the next junction turn right and after about 1.4 km right again. Now we reach Wolperode. We pass through the town and ride westward on a serpentine section (descent!) to the country road to Bad Gandersheim. We turn left and see the Brunshausen monastery on the right side.

On the adjacent sculpture path, it then goes back towards the town center.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

For a stopover, the gastronomy in Wolperode - with products from their own production - and the cafés in Brunshausen with their homemade cakes and tarts are especially recommended.

You should not miss the annual Gandersheim Cathedral Festival in the summer, held against the special backdrop of the west portal of the collegiate church.

Safety guidelines

The route includes a steeper incline (approx. 20%) from Dannhausen towards Heber.
