For centuries, the citizens of Goslar buried their deceased around the parish churches. By the early 19th century, however, the shortage of space had become so severe that a new cemetery outside the city walls was needed. In 1821, the decision was made to locate it west of the Old Town on what is now Hildesheimer Straße. Today, the cemetery serves as both a burial ground and a monument to contemporary history.
