Trail running

Running on narrow paths

Trail running means running on narrow, natural paths or cross-country. The Harz Mountains offer ideal conditions with their varied terrain and diverse vegetation – whether for short, intense runs or for long, endurance tours.

Beginners in particular benefit from the experience of seasoned runners. It’s a good idea to join a local running group or take part in a guided tour. There you’ll get practical tips on routes, running technique, equipment, and nutrition. The level of difficulty in trail running is individual and can’t be defined uniformly.

For many athletes, the main appeal lies in leaving familiar city routes behind and challenging the body with new conditions. The distance of the route matters less than its profile. Different surfaces, inclines, descents, and natural obstacles challenge muscles, stamina, and technique in a special way.

For trail running, you need shoes with a stable tread and good grip – they’re the most important requirement for running safely off-road. Most models also protect you from sharp stones and moisture.

Functional clothing that supports movement and breathability is equally important. This includes trousers, a running jacket and a functional shirt. Many trail running products come with practical extras such as small pockets for bars, a phone or keys, and integrated compression support.

Depending on the route and duration, it’s worth bringing a map or a GPS device, your phone, a hydration belt or backpack, and a small emergency snack. That way, you’re well prepared even for longer or more demanding trails.
