Ebersburg Castle ruins
The ruins of Burg Ebersburg lie on a porphyry cone on the southern edge of the Harz mountains, north of the village of Herrmannsacker, above the Gasthaus Sägemühle (Sawmill Guesthouse) on Breitensteiner Strasse.
The castle ruins that are over 800-year-old have a captivating romantic charm. The ruins are dominated by the massive castle tower. As it stands today, the tower is over 18 metres high and its walls are 4.75 metres thick, conveying an impression of strength, power and permanence. The castle was built between 1180 and 1191 on the orders of Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia, not least to display his power to the outside world as well as to assert his presence on the local population.
