The Osterode Forest Bird Sanctuary is home to about 50 native bird species and a tame eagle owl, set amid nature along a circular trail about 400 meters long.

In addition to various waterfowl, gallinaceous birds, pigeons, ravens, and songbirds, there are also several birds of prey, as well as the shy capercaillie. You can also find some exotic peacocks that love to strut their stuff. Among other things, there’s a bee colony and an ant colony, as well as free-roaming rabbits and the playful runner ducks. Information boards provide details about the animals, the environment, and nature.

Feeding the ducks is great fun for the kids—but please use only the special feed provided by the Waldvogelstation to ensure the animals stay healthy.

Schoolchildren have the opportunity to earn a nature explorer certificate and learn many interesting facts about nature and environmental protection.

The barefoot trail is an experience for the senses. Here, you can feel different types of terrain with your bare feet. The barefoot trail stimulates the body and boosts the immune system.

Several benches invite you to linger, and there are also picnic areas at the bird sanctuary to round out your visit.
