The Walpurgishalle was designed in 1901 on the Hexenplatz near Thale on the initiative of the painter Hermann Hendrich.
Bernhard Sehring built the hall in the Germanic style and Hendrich donated five large paintings for the interior. The Walpurgis Hall still serves as an exhibition space for these paintings by Hendrich, which show five scenes from Walpurgis Night in Goethe's "Faust": the appearance of Gretchen, the witches' dance, the will-o'-the-wisp dance, the Mammon's cave and the wind bride. There are changing special exhibitions in an adjoining room of the hall. Performances by the Harz Mountain Theater take place in the immediate vicinity of the Walpurgis Hall.
