Bad Lauterberg in the Harz

Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains is an officially recognised Kneipp spa and a modern holiday resort. The town lies on the sunny side of the Harz, surrounded by rivers, quiet mountain lakes and clear mountain air. As the oldest hydrotherapy spa in northern Germany, the place offers treatments based on the methods of Sebastian Kneipp. Several specialised clinics provide guests and patients with medical care and treatment.

In the spa park you can take a walk among old trees, ponds and water-treading pools. Next to the music pavilion stand the historic spa house and the guest house. Part of the park is now an activity area with mini golf, football billiards and shuffleboard, a boules court, outdoor chess, tennis courts, an outdoor fitness park and the Bad Lauterberg dream playground. In the old town you’ll find the traffic-calmed shopping street – the so-called boulevard – with specialist shops, boutiques, cafés, bistros and restaurants.

Right next to the town are the Oder Dam and the Wiesenbeker Teich mountain lake, which feature a water-ski facility and bathing area. From here, hiking trails lead in all directions, including the long-distance trail “Harzer BaudenSteig”. There’s also a Nordic walking park and access to the mountain bike network of the Volksbank Arena Harz.

You can find relaxation and activity in the Vitamar swimming and sauna park, which boasts the largest wave pool in the Harz, a 100-metre-long black hole slide, a white-water channel, a children’s area, whirlpools and large saunas. In the Kirchberg Therme you can enjoy thermal brine pools, a freshwater lagoon, an artificial white-water stream, subtropical plants and peaceful sunbathing areas.

The cultural offering ranges from the Walpurgis celebration and children’s festival in the spa park to the wine festival, brass band concerts and folklore, as well as lectures and museums.
In winter, you can reach the winter sports areas in the higher regions of the Harz from Bad Lauterberg. Locally, there’s an approximately 300-metre-long ski slope with a drag lift and access to the 47‑kilometre‑long South Harz cross-country ski trail network. You can find more information about winter sports on the winter sports page for Bad Lauterberg.
