The three districts of the town of Oberharz am Brocken are located in the Harz Nature Park, surrounded by the reservoir systems of the Bode and Rappbode rivers.
A 190 kilometre long network of trails connects hiking and terrain spa routes, the Köhlerweg, the southern route of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, and the Selketal-Stieg. This allows you to plan tours of different lengths and levels of difficulty. The region is also easy to reach thanks to its connection to the Harz Narrow-Gauge Railways.
Hasselfelde
At the Harzköhlerei Stemberghaus, you can learn about the traditional charcoal burning of wood. In the charcoal-burning museum, you can find out more about the history of the craft. In the adjoining charcoal burners’ hut with around 100 seats, food and drinks are served. From early April to the end of October, you can watch the building and burning of the earth kilns.
At the edge of town lies the Pullman City Harz adventure park. On an area of 100,000 square metres, a Western town is recreated as it looked in the mid‑19th century.
From May to September, the Waldseebad is open. The pool is fed by spring water, covers 10,000 square metres, and offers a diving platform, sunbathing lawns, and a beach volleyball court.
Stiege
The townscape is characterised by an ensemble of castle, bell house, and church, located directly by a lake. As a junction of the Selketal Railway, Stiege has had the smallest turning loop in Europe since 1984. Not far from the station stands the Stiege stave church, the only sacred building in the Norwegian dragon style in Germany.
There are two lakes in the village where you can go fishing.
Trautenstein
The health resort of Trautenstein is surrounded by meadows, streams, and moors. You can explore the surroundings on foot, by bike, or mountain bike, for example on the 8 kilometre circular trail around the dam wall.
From the Carlshaus Tower, at an altitude of 626 metres, you can enjoy wide views over the Harz massif. The wooden church in the village features baroque half-timbering and a painted barrel ceiling with clouds and stars.
In summer, the natural pool in the Dammbachtal offers opportunities for swimming and relaxation. In winter, you’ll find groomed cross-country trails, natural ice rinks, and toboggan slopes.
Further information can be found on the region’s winter sports page.
