Devilishly beautiful and hellishly exciting!
Cross the Harz Mountains from west to east or from Osterode to Thale. Over 100 kilometres – even 150 kilometres if you include all the variants – you’ll experience gentle, fragrant mountain meadows around Buntenbock, bizarre rock formations in the Brocken area, the extensive Rappode dam system, and finally the deep Bodetal gorge just before Thale.
You'll hike through the Harz National Park with its unique Brocken moorland. Everywhere, you’ll encounter the magical world of legends and myths, as well as traces of more than a thousand years of mining history. Like liquid gold, the water flows through the ditches of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Harz Water Management System” and gathers in idyllic ponds surrounded by meadows and forests. They invite you to rest and dream. In many places, even a refreshing swim is allowed.
Ambitious hikers can rack up mileage by completing the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg in fewer than the five recommended stages. Pleasure hikers tackle one of the approx. 20-kilometre stages each day and make sure not to miss any of the cosy forest inns.
Along the route, the so-called “experience islands” point out interesting but often hidden details in the surroundings. With the multimedia guide, you can join Hanni & Paul on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg (TIP: download the multimedia guide onto your phone before your hike!).
The Harzer-Hexen-Stieg is a joint project of Harzklub, Harz National Park and the Harz Tourism Association.
It is an award-winning “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” and belongs to the exclusive group of Top Trails of Germany.
