Herzberg

with Lonau, Scharzfeld & Sieber

The residential town of Herzberg is located on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains. It includes the four holiday and spa resorts of Sieber, Scharzfeld, Lonau and Pöhlde.

In and around the town, you’ll find many cultural attractions and nature-based experiences. High above Herzberg stands the more than 950-year-old Welfenschloss. It is considered the largest half-timbered castle in Lower Saxony. Its striking architecture makes it an important testimony to the building history of the Harz region. A permanent exhibition shows you the development and use of the castle over the centuries.

If you enjoy hiking or exploring nature, you’ll find numerous trails and routes in Herzberg. A well-known destination is Lake Juessee in the town centre. This sinkhole lake was formed about 8,000 to 14,000 years ago and invites you to take a walk around the water.

In the Lonau district, the Lonautal Valley lies directly within the Harz National Park. Here, various hiking trails lead through the valley to destinations such as the Hanskühnenburg. The Sieber hiking area includes more than 50 signposted paths with a total length of around 250 kilometres. There is also a leisure complex, an open-air swimming pool and an adventure playground with a 50-metre slide. Pöhlde offers you many traces of history, including the monastery church, the castle site “König Heinrichs Vogelherd” and the Rhume spring. The spring is one of the largest and most water-rich karst springs in Europe.

In Scharzfeld, the Scharzfels Castle Ruins rise on a dolomite rock. On the slope of the Steinberg lies the Steinkirche. Not far away you’ll find the Einhornhöhle, one of the largest karst caves in the Harz Mountains. This natural and cultural monument illustrates the long history of settlement in the southwestern Harz.
