The climatic health resort of Neustadt is situated on the southern slope of the Harz Mountains, surrounded by mixed forests and a particularly pure climate. Together with landlords, physiotherapists and the local doctor Dr André Haas, the town offers outpatient “PneumoCures”. These are aimed at people with chronic lung diseases or those with cardiovascular problems.
The townscape is characterised by half-timbered houses and the Hohnstein Castle Ruins, which overlook Neustadt. The almost 900-year-old complex once served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Hohnstein. After extensive restoration work, it now houses a tavern and a terrace from which you can look out over the Southern Harz. Hikers, nature lovers and cyclists use the castle as a starting point for tours into the surrounding mountains, to the nearby Neustadt Dam or across the open hills of the Harz foothills.
At the entrance to the town stands the historic city gate, Neustadt’s landmark. It dates back to 1412 and houses the local museum with many exhibits on the town’s history. In the centre, you can find the St George’s Church, the Gondelteich pond and the large Roland statue at the Ratskeller, a symbol of municipal jurisdiction. For leisure activities, there is the forest swimming pool, the spa park, a marble run and the golf course in Neustadt. South of Neustadt, collectors of the Harz Hiking Badge will find the Harz wooden steam locomotive as HWN stamp 99. Not far away is also the Ebersburg Castle Ruins, which is well worth a visit.
