Sangerhausen

with Wippra and Wettelrode

Sangerhausen lies on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains and its slopes form the northern boundary of the Golden Meadow. The city, which is over 1,000 years old, is nicknamed the Mountain and Rose City.

In the listed old town, you’ll find many historic buildings. These include Göpenstraße, Kornmarkt, the Renaissance town hall, patrician houses and the late Gothic Jacobikirche. The oldest building is the Ulrichskirche. It stands on the Romanesque Road and is considered one of the most important sacred buildings in the Harz and Kyffhäuser region.

A special place in Sangerhausen is the Europa-Rosarium. It is regarded as the largest rose collection in the world. Over 8,600 varieties and species grow here on 13 hectares. You can see wild and bed roses, park and climbing rose pyramids, as well as rare breeds such as the “Black Rose” or the “Green Rose”. About 320 different species of trees and shrubs frame the site and at the same time turn it into an arboretum.

At the Spengler Museum you can explore the region’s history. It displays exhibits on geology, natural history, the Ice Age, prehistory and early history, as well as on the development of the town. The skeleton of a steppe elephant from Edersleben is the most striking exhibit.

Another destination is the Mining Adventure Centre Röhrig Shaft Wettelrode. A hoist ride using the preserved shaft system takes you 283 metres underground. The mine railway takes you to the show mine, where copper ore mining is demonstrated. Above ground, in the museum and on a mining educational trail, you can learn how mining has changed from ancient times to the present day.
