Sankt Andreasberg

At an altitude of 600 to 900 metres, Sankt Andreasberg is the highest mountain town in the Harz. Colourful wooden houses, a yellow bell tower and steep streets shape the townscape on the high plateau.

Around 200 kilometres of hiking trails lead through the Harz National Park. In spring and summer, the mountain meadows are in bloom, and the open location offers wide panoramic views. For many hikers and nature lovers, this is a regular starting point for their tours.

You can get insights into the history of mining at the Samson Mine. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Harz Water Management System”. A descent 190 metres deep into the mine shows you what the working life was like in former silver ore mining. It also houses the last original preserved man-riding system of its kind. In the pithead building, you will find the Harzer Roller Museum with an exhibition about the canary birds of the same name that were once bred by miners.

At the National Park House Sankt Andreasberg, you can learn about the Harz habitats. An exhibition, an adventure cinema and various events introduce you to the world of local nature.

You can also be active above the town. The 550-metre-long summer toboggan run offers outdoor fun, as do the marked routes for Nordic walking and mountain biking.

In winter, Sankt Andreasberg turns into a centre for winter sports. In the ski areas on the Matthias-Schmidt-Berg and Sonnenberg, you’ll find slopes of various levels of difficulty, a freestyle run for snowboarders, two double chairlifts, several drag lifts and cosy places to stop for a break.

The network of cross-country ski trails covers several hundred kilometres. In the Teichtal, you’ll find a large illuminated toboggan slope, and the snow tubing facility promises thrilling rides on inflatable rings.
