The turn of the century 1900 was a time of great sanatorium foundations throughout Europe. Here in the Harz mountains, the philologist and physician Dr. Friedrich Barner sought to realise a new kind of sanatorium.
He acquired two villas built in typical regional timber construction a little above the centre of Braunlage. And had the Art Nouveau architect Albin Müller do his design work on them - up to and including the redesign of a central building that was to connect the two villas.
