  • Start: Various starting points possible. Starting point No. 1 in Gandersheim city center, parking lot Stiftsfreiheit
  • Destination: Circular route with the possibility to use other entry and exit points as well.
The route offers many beautiful viewpoints over the Heberbörde and the Harz foothills. The path runs almost exclusively on cycle paths, paved field and forest roads, and on side roads.

Right from the starting point of the route, you have the opportunity to experience Gandersheim’s history, for example on a walk through the old town, as a guest in the municipal museum or when visiting the Romanesque collegiate church with the exhibition “Rediscovering Treasures”. You should also plan to visit the former Brunshausen monastery. It is worth taking a look at the founding place of the Gandersheim foundation and the exhibitions of the portal to history there, as well as visiting the local gastronomy. In the district of Clus, you should see the Romanesque monastery church with the Gothic carved altar from 1487 and possibly make a detour to the forest educational trail.

Directions

From the town center, we drive eastward up Bismarckstraße, cross the traffic light intersection and turn left behind the Roswitha Gymnasium into the sculpture cycle path towards Lamspringe. We cross a bridge behind the Schott-Auer works site and go left down the path, then right onto the road to Clus. We follow the road and pass the current monastery estate (where the monastery church is also located) and go through the village. After the town sign, there is a parking lot on the left side. From here, a forest educational trail branches off to the left, which is worth taking a look at. The route continues northwards to Dankelsheim. Before the village, the path goes left uphill to the Dankelsheim forest. Here we have a very nice view over the Heberbörde. We continue into the forest towards Heckenbeck (ascent!). Then a nice descent to Heckenbeck awaits us. We go through the village and follow the road south. Past the cemetery and sports field, the route climbs towards Orxhausen. After about 200m, on the left side, is the natural monument twin beech. We continue to federal road 64, turn left there and cycle on the bike path to Orxhausen. At the end of the village, we turn left. Then the route follows the long-distance cycle path R1 back to Bad Gandersheim.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

For a stopover, the cafés in Brunshausen are especially recommended with their homemade cakes and pies as well as coffee and tea specialties – enjoy the special atmosphere within the walls of the former monastery.

You should not miss the annual Gandersheim Cathedral Festival held every summer against the distinctive backdrop of the west portal of the collegiate church.

Safety guidelines

Several moderate climbs have to be mastered along the route.
