The churches & monasteries

along the way

On the Harz Monastery Trail, you’ll come across impressive churches and monasteries that have been part of Harz history for centuries. Between Romanesque and Reformation, the paths lead you to ancient walls, quiet churches, and lively monastery complexes – nestled in wide landscapes and well-kept gardens. Whether it’s Drübeck Monastery, Ilsenburg Monastery, or the Collegiate Church of St. Cyriakus in Gernrode – each building tells stories of faith, the daily life of monks and nuns, and the changes of centuries past. Some monasteries are museums today, while others invite you to events or quiet moments. The trail combines experiences of nature, cultural history, and spirituality. You’ll walk through villages, forests, and historic sites – always within sight of centuries-old traces of monastic life. Every stage becomes a small journey towards inner peace and mindful travelling.
