Harz Monastery Trail

Relaxation potential for body, mind and soul

The Harz Monastery Hiking Trail takes you between Goslar and Halberstadt through an exceptionally dense landscape of monasteries and churches. On seven stages, each between 10 and 22 kilometres long, you can combine movement in nature with cultural experiences. There are hardly any steep climbs – plenty of time to walk, look around and take a breath. The route follows in the footsteps of the Harz monasteries, which have shaped the region culturally and economically for centuries. You will walk through fragrant monastery gardens and across Gothic cloisters, reaching churches, museums and distilleries. Many of these places invite you to events or quiet moments of reflection. The trail runs along the Oker, Ecker and Bode rivers, through romantic river landscapes, past the Teufelsmauer near Blankenburg and Thale, and through the Schimmerwald. You walk along the former inner-German border, past fish-rich ponds and small Romanesque churches – always gathering new impressions for body, mind and soul.
