Cycling

in the southern Harz & Kyffhäuser

On the road on two wheels

In the southern Harz & Kyffhäuser region, you can look forward to a dense and well-signposted cycling network. Whether you use a touring bike, mountain bike or road bike – here you’ll find routes with different levels of difficulty and character. The paths lead through forests, past quiet ponds and gentle rivers. Again and again, views open up of villages and towns full of history.

The Kyffhäuser Cycle Route takes you 36 kilometres around the Kyffhäuser Mountains. The route runs through a varied landscape with salt meadows, orchards and tree-lined avenues.

Along the route, you can visit the Panorama Museum and the Kyffhäuser Monument in Bad Frankenhausen. You can also explore the Barbarossa Cave and the Royal Palace. On the way, you have views of the Golden Aue with the Kelbra reservoir and the ruins of Rothenburg. The cycle path is connected to the Harz circular route.

The Harz Circular Trail

Within Saxony-Anhalt, you have to cover 220 km between Gernrode and Rottleberode. The tour offers rather gentle climbs in a beautiful landscape. If you like, you can take on more challenging tours, for example to the Brocken or the Hexentanzplatz. You can also use your bike with the Harz narrow-gauge railway and the cable car to the Hexentanzplatz or change to the Brocken Railway.

The “Path to the Stone Age” follows the river Wipper for about 19 kilometres to the impressive shell limestone cliffs of the Wipper Gorge. This valley is full of archaeological and historical evidence. The excavation site “Steinrinne” in Bilzingsleben is just the beginning! You can also find old castles, monastery ruins and historic half-timbered villages.
