#NoTrash
Littering is also becoming an increasing problem in Harz National Park. The rubbish left behind by careless people can seriously spoil the enjoyment of nature. Bottles, cans, dog waste bags, cigarette ends, plastic packaging and even nappies end up in the forest. Every year, rangers and volunteers collect more than 1,000 bags of rubbish from along the park’s trails.
Taking part is easy!
Litter pickers and rubbish bags are available at the following National Park facilities:
Once equipped, nature lovers can head out on their hikes and help clean up nature along the way. Anyone who hands in their filled rubbish bag at one of the mentioned National Park facilities after their walk will receive one of the popular special stamps of the Harz Hiking Badge with the campaign hashtag #NoTrash as a thank-you.
Important: Of course, the National Park rules also apply to participants in this campaign. So please stay on the paths while collecting rubbish. The “NoTrash” rubbish bags are made of corn starch, so that the campaign doesn’t produce even more plastic waste. There are no rubbish bins within the National Park area itself, to protect animals that might mistake the waste for food. By the way, this is not only the case in the Harz. Around 20 years ago, bins were removed from public forests across the country.

Exhibition “Buchen musst du suchen”
at Stolberg Castle
The exhibition “You Have to Search for Beeches” was created in 2013 as part of an ELER project at Stolberg Castle as the Natura 2000 information centre of the Harz region. Natura 2000 aims to protect a representative part of our native beech forests. The exhibition is therefore dedicated to the European beech and presents it in a new light.
